MEET THE J BEHIND JO
WHY DO YOU LOVE INTERIOR DESIGN?
When I am designing spaces (especially peoples homes) I just come alive. It is part problems solving (layout, flow, function of a space) – part art + play (style, color, patterns, light…). Good interior design makes us feel comfortable, great designs are the ones that make us feel something we didn’t even realize was important to us – it fills our soul with joy + love. And even when I am not working on an actual project, in my head I am always playing around with ideas. And as my husband, daughter and dog know too well, I love changing our own home around because I suddenly realizes there is a better way to achieve a certain function and/or feel. Especially since becoming a mom and living with a tiny human, I realized that what works one day may not another. The way we use space should be way more fluid and allow us to truly live IN them not AROUND them. To me a home should be the stage where we can all play together in all those ever-changing roles modern life is asking us to slip in and out of.
As Winston Churchill already said it in 1944: “We shape our dwellings and afterwards our dwellings shape us….”
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
I am somewhat a late bloomer and shape-shifter when it comes to my career. I simply had too many interests and too little role models to even consider a creative profession right off the bat.
So it took me until my later 30s to realize a dream that 11-year-old me had all along. Because she loved re-arranging her room. She couldn’t wait to change out EVERYTHING about her doll house, and she also knew that her book shelf would look so much better in a monochromatic scheme. (I had my mom get me various hues of blue wrapping paper and covered every single book until it had a soft gradient across the 5 big shelves.)
WHERE DID YOU CAREER TAKE YOU INITIALLY?
Well, picture a little magnetic ball. One that just always had a strong pull towards art and anything design but was constantly trying to roll in a nice linear line towards a sensible, reliable, and predictable career outcome. That was me. I graduated art school at 18 to launch into a rather boring business degree, which led me into a rewarding marketing career at LEGO. But that pull, it was still there. Working with Graphic Designers on a daily basis, I just wanted to be on their side of the meeting room table. So in my free time I studied and practiced digital design from illustrations to branding and even web design. And what started as a hobby turned slowly into an income stream which I made my full-time focus in 2011. And only until rather recently when that path led me back to my long lost passion for interiors. I was living in Hawaii at the time, co-owning a small branding agency and more and more of our clients asked to apply our visions to commercial spaces, such as restaurants, retail, non-profit and education. But when it really blossomed again in my heart is when I remodeled the condo my friend owned, doing everything by ourselves, including tiling, flooring and sink reglazing. I had the time of my life. I realized this is what I want to do! Forever!!!
